The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Released in 2015, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is a American action spy film directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander and Elizabeth Debicki. It is based on the 1964 MGM television series of the same name.
30 artists at BlueBolt worked on 224 shots over a period of 8 months. This included clean up, environment work to make England look like Italy, and CG vehicles and CG environments for the final chase scene.
For the Vinciguerra island scene, the castle, cliffs and island were all created in CG but modelled on a real castle. The water surrounding the island was based on live action plates, but then manipulated or combined with CG.
BlueBolt supervised the 2nd unit filming in a rainy Wales and a sunny Italy. Most of it was working at night with the stunt team. We also had a day shooting from a helicopter to get aerial shots and elements for VFX. The big chase sequence was filmed at several locations with different lighting and weather conditions requiring VFX work to provide seamless shot continuity.
The biggest challenge was recreating the chase sequence involving the off road vehicles. The original plates didn't give the required pace for this action set piece. BlueBolt recreated the same locations with the help of digital matte paintings, 2.5D projections and 3D environments, along with CG vehicles and digi-doubles to match the live action. We could then create the desired camera moves that the director wanted.
