Game of Thrones
Winter is coming…
BlueBolt was the lead VFX house on Season 1 of Game of Thrones. Set in the fantasy world of Westeros, it follows the struggle for power between rival houses as they battle for the Iron Throne. It first aired on HBO in 2011 and consists of ten episodes which were shot in Northern Ireland and Malta.
BlueBolt worked on set extensions to turn a 6m quarry rockface into the Great Wall made of solid ice and rising more than 200m up and stretching hundreds of kilometres into the distance. Further south on Westeros, BlueBolt added the castle at Winterfell to moorland background plates and many set extensions to provide a sense of scale in the shots around the castle grounds. Similar shots were created for the Red Keep overlooking Blackwater Bay.
Our digital matte painting artists provided some establishing shots as horsemen approach The Eyrie - a mountain top stronghold near the east coast of Westeros. In addition, set extensions were created for a camera reveal showing Tyrian Lannister imprisoned in a sky cell high up the castle walls.
For the finale, BlueBolt gave birth to Daenerys Targaryen's baby dragons at the end of Season 1.
